Hi! I’m Jessica!
I’m a student studying journalism and hoping to pursue a career in fashion media. Basically, I want to be Miranda Priestly (but nicer, hopefully). I also work for a local newspaper where I cover city and state news and, more importantly, write horoscopes.
Why fashion?
To me, fashion is more than just wearing pretty clothes (although that’s certainly part of it). It’s an art form that uses the human form as a canvas, allowing us to tell people a story just by walking into a room. From the runway to the silver screen to your local grocery store, everywhere you go you are surrounded by people who have made choices about how they present themselves. These choices have so much to tell us about ourselves and each other.
And yes, they often come in the form of very pretty dresses.
Fashion is for everyone.
You don’t need to know all the big designers to engage with the fashion community. While I’m perpetually in awe of the stunning creations Robert Wun or Schiaparelli send down the runway, fashion is about more than a label. It’s about how you see yourself and how you want to be seen by others.
I’ll always have something to say about Elle Fanning in Alexander McQueen, but I also want to tell the story of the girl I see walking around campus in a million layers of skirts and jewelry that she bought from the local thrift shop. The wonderful thing about the rise of the online fashion space is that anyone can take inspiration from the runway, the red carpet or even just a cool girl walking down the street.
Argue with me!
Like I said, fashion is an art. And the beautiful thing about art is that there is no clear answer to whether a piece is “good” or “bad”. You will probably hate outfits I love and love outfits I hate. Either way, I want to hear your thoughts. My taste has changed substantially over time, and discussing art is a great way to learn about it.
